Linux : Opinions : Why open content matters
Posted: ( Fri 13th Apr 2001 01:18:58[AM] UTC )
"In this article, I'll argue that the open content movement--a movement to release written documents with a license similar to the GNU General Public License (GPL)--is due to the realization that a for-profit industry was about to lock up indispensable public knowledge and, in so doing, pose a grave threat to the advancement of knowledge and human welfare. The stakes are very high."

Linux : Opinions : Open Source-onomics: Examining some pseudo-economic arguments about Open Source
Posted: ( Fri 13th Apr 2001 01:05:23[AM] UTC )
While the technical arguments against Linux and Open Source are being gradually silenced, several unrefuted myths about the economics of Open Source continue to float about, confusing and scaring off people considering these alternative products. Worse, the Open Source community is itself divided on such issues, and is unable to provide a cogent rebuttal. This article is an attempt to set the record straight.

Linux : Opinions : Should IBM 'netscape' Microsoft with Corel?
Posted: ( Thu 12th Apr 2001 01:11:23[AM] UTC )
Since Microsoft's office productivity line is a major revenue stream, IBM would be netscaping Microsoft, just like Microsoft netscaped Netscape half a decade before. So there's a certain delicious irony in that. And if the bad investment in Corel finances the purchase of the WordPerfect assets by IBM, that is poetic justice and the world is again just.

Linux : Opinions : A slow start in embedded software
Posted: ( Wed 11th Apr 2001 11:40:54[PM] UTC )
Some of the reasons Microsoft has not cracked into the embedded software market as much as might be expected are peculiar to the software giant, and some pertain to the market as a whole. Initially, the conditions of the "new" appliance market will tend to favor Linux. As the appliance market matures and moves upstream, Windows will capture more opportunities.

Linux : Opinions : Something wicked this way comes
Posted: ( Wed 11th Apr 2001 11:11:07[PM] UTC )
Last week a pack of lawyers set upon Red Hat Inc., as earlier they had infested VA Linux. Soon other publicly traded Linux companies will be targeted. Prepare for the litigious rape of the Linux companies. Class-action law firms have very little concern for right and wrong. The rest of us get to pay for it, and it's something the Linux community can ill afford.

Linux : Opinions : Borland's Kylix: Turbocharging Linux development
Posted: ( Tue 10th Apr 2001 07:11:22[PM] UTC )
For programmers who need to develop sophisticated, high-performance code where the user interface is only a small part of the project, Kylix may not be the right way to go. But, for a corporate developer writing vertical applications -- especially for in-house use in an environment where many such applications are needed in a short time -- Kylix is a splendid choice.

Linux : Opinions : Setting up a Linux Web server - Part 2
Posted: ( Mon 9th Apr 2001 11:57:25[PM] UTC )
The best way to exploit the new chipsets on this A7V133 motherboard is to use the 2.4 kernel. The older kernels don't take advantage of the UDMA100 IDE controller and drives. Unfortunately, there are some problems with the new motherboards and the newest kernels, and sometimes they feed off of each other.

Linux : Opinions : The developers haven't heard
Posted: ( Wed 4th Apr 2001 01:54:40[AM] UTC )
Sense suggests that contrary to the current prevailing view there is plenty of room for a desktop-optimized Linux distribution. And the recipe is not at all tough. It's so easy, in fact, that I've built one right here, on my desktop machine, no big deal.

Linux : Opinions : Microsoft should be feared and despised!
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 08:03:29[PM] UTC )
The potential damage they can do with this license is staggering. I encourage everyone to take the time to read it, particularly "License to Microsoft". It's heinous, and more, it's frightening because I know that some people won't read it and will lose the rights to their own data/content without knowing.

Linux : Opinions : Irving Wladawsky-Berger: " Why I believe Linux will fundamewntally change the IT industry"
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 07:43:49[PM] UTC )
Linux is a phenomenon that holds the potential to change the game along two important dimensions. First, it fulfills a big promise: all hardware, software and applications working together and second, it alters the way our industry delivers value to its customers.

Linux : Opinions : The StartX files: Of mice and finns
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 07:21:26[PM] UTC )
PWM is a simple little window manager with the capability to combine multiple windows into one frame. By linking separate instances of Netscape together, you can build a simulated multi-tabbed browser with all your favorite Linux haunts. And you can edit the config file to create this automatically.

Linux : Opinions : And my new desktop will be...
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 02:11:50[AM] UTC )
"The truth is that Linux, and the rest of the Unix family, simply aren't popular for desktop systems. Corel, the company that tried the hardest to bring out a commercially successful desktop version of Linux, fell flat on its face despite a darned good package. I'll keep using it-and so will hundreds of thousands of Linux fans-but for the foreseeable future, Linux won't be appearing on many desktops."

Linux : Opinions : Consolidate servers with VMWare GSX, ESX
Posted: ( Mon 2nd Apr 2001 10:00:38[PM] UTC )
The VMware GSX (for workgroup) and ESX (for enterprisewide needs) products promise to reduce the number of servers by running your servers instead under one giant mainframe-style Linux box, and load the guest OS environments in an arbitrary number of virtual machines.

Linux : Opinions : RIAA: Gnutella not yet a threat
Posted: ( Mon 2nd Apr 2001 01:27:57[AM] UTC )
According to Frank Creighton, the Recording Industry Association of America's chief anti-piracy officer, the community of file swappers that doesn't trade through a central server just isn't enough of a problem to warrant the efforts leveled at independent OpenNap and other Napster clones. He said his organization is watching the protean network but isn't yet bothering to crack down on members.

Linux : Opinions : Proving Open Source still matters
Posted: ( Sun 1st Apr 2001 10:43:03[PM] UTC )
There is a need for a comprehensive, credible, longitudinal study of the real cost of running a business with open-source versus closed-source proprietary software. The study, though funded by the open-source community, must be conducted by a third-party research firm. The open-source community must commit to publishing in full, the analysts’ findings.
