Red Hat recently announced that it was expanding its e-commerce offerings by integrating Akopia's Interchange open source e-commerce application into the Red Hat e-commerce platform. Buried in the fine print of Red Hat's press release was the fact that Red Hat had acquired Akopia as part of this strategic move.

"TrustedBSD and SELinux are similar in many ways, and also differ in many ways. The similarities lie in overlapping functionality and architectural goals; the differences only begin with the choice of operating systems ... "Our workstations are running Linux Mandrake 7.2 with either WordPerfect Office or Star Office. Approximately 95 percent of the employees use Star Office. All of our developers use Linux based tools such as Java, Apache, PHP, emacs, Python, and PERL to develop our travel industry applications. They all run on standard equipment that was not nearly top-of-the-line."

"We are working closely with the GNOME-print project to integrate our recently open source OMNI print architecture into GNOME as the standard printing architecture. This will bring hundreds of print devices to Linux and GNOME as well as photo quality printing. We are also at this point in time in talks with the GNOME people to integrate our speech recognition software with gtk and GNOME."

"Tux is a Web server that we built. It's actually integrated with the 2.4 kernel, and it delivers world record SpecWeb (testing standard) performance. We set four records: single, dual, quad and eight-CPU records. One of the things that we see is being able to use Tux as an Apache (Web server software) accelerator."

Does Linux need to be slimmed down? Poole, the co-founder and former chairman of Internet services firm Vivid Studios prior to his work with Mandrakesoft, doesn't think so. "People said the same thing about the Internet in the early days," he says. "They said the Internet should be streamlined, that it was too much. Obviously, things need to be simple for users, but I don't think restricting choice is really the answer."
