FreeOS Links main : Opinions : Should RISC OS be open sourced?
Posted: ( Sun 27th Nov 2005 01:40:32[AM] UTC )
The debate over whether or not RISC OS should be open sourced took another turn this week when Peter Naulls argued that "certain parts" of the OS could be released under an open source licence.

I spend most of my time teaching classes on Solaris internals, device drivers, and kernel crash dump analysis and debugging. When explaining to classes how various subsystems are implemented in Solaris, students often ask, "How does it work in Linux?" or, "In FreeBSD, it works like this, how about Solaris?" This article examines three of the basic subsystems of the kernel and compares implementation between Solaris 10, Linux 2.6, and FreeBSD 5.3.
Linux : Opinions : Linux and NTFS: peace at last?
Posted: ( Tue 13th Sep 2005 04:52:59[PM] UTC )
Reading from NTFS file systems wasn't too much trouble. Writing to a file or creating a new file, though, was something else again. And, trying to adjust the size of an NTFS partition or recover a dead file was, while not impossible, hard enough that few people wanted to try it. Now, however, Paragon Software Group has created its own NTFS driver: NTFS for Linux. And, from what my friends over at PC Magazine Labs can tell, it works pretty darn well.
Linux : Opinions : Why MS Office for Linux is a win-win
Posted: ( Fri 19th Aug 2005 04:37:08[PM] UTC )
Dana Blankenhorn asks an important question which Microsoft ought to be asking itself: Would you buy MS Office for Linux? Let's go back a few years, to the antitrust suit brought about by the DoJ under the Clinton administration…
Linux : Articles : How Toyota and Linux Keep Collaboration Simple

The Linux and Toyota communities are both composed of engineers, so members have the same skills as their colleagues and speak the same language. But these groups are far more disciplined and rigorous in their approach to work than are other engineering communities.
Linux : Opinions : Mcrosoft to buy Red Hat? Say it ain’'t so
Posted: ( Wed 25th May 2005 03:27:05[PM] UTC )
As David Berlind recently pointed out in his piece Is Microsoft considering acquisition of Red Hat? Microsoft could see Red Hat’s acquisition as a nice way to undermine IBM, but might not consider that a sufficient reason to do it. That, of course, is Microsoft’s perspective, but what about Red Hat’s? This is a company, remember, that wants to be Microsoft and, like Microsoft, makes its living packaging and selling other people’s ideas.
Linux : Howtos : How to block Gnutella with a Linux/Iptables firewall
Posted: ( Wed 25th May 2005 03:18:59[PM] UTC )
Many P2P (peer to peer) protocols are rather complex to control using packet filtering firewalls such as Linux's IpTables. This is because they often dont use fixed port numbers, sometimes use multiple connection protocols or even encryption.
The P2PWall project is developing software add-ins for Iptables to overcome these issues. The "Rope" module from the P2PWall project provides a scriptable kernel module for packet identification.
This article describes how to use Linux, Iptables and ROPE to identify (and block) the Gnutella protocol.

The goal of the series is to expose a trend in open source that is leading to the creation of a new breed of "effective" monopolies by commercial open source companies.

It just isn't fair that Windows users get all the viruses. I mean really, shouldn't Linux users be in on the fun as well? Well... thanks to the folks running the Wine project, Linux users can "catch the virus bug" too -- sort of.
Linux : Articles : Linux on the desktop

What are we to make of IBM's silence about its desktop Linux policy?
A while back, chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano challenged the company to move its desktops to Linux by the end of 2005. What's clear is that this hasn't happened and doesn't look like happening. And there's probably a good reason.

FreeDOS : Articles : My workstation OS: FreeDOS

In battles over operating system superiority, emotions run high. Capabilities are assembled like armies and run out on discussion boards to face the flames. So let me say this now: your operating system is probably better than mine. Most modern operating systems are better than FreeDOS when considered by any objective criteria. FreeDOS doesn't multitask, doesn't surf the Internet easily, isn't great for multimedia productions, and doesn't even do Windows. But I love it anyway.
