Linux : Reviews : Abit KT7-RAID Socket A motherboard
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:39:54[PM] UTC )
"This board packs a killer punch, and there is no question it is one of the top boards for Socket A processors. In the past, Abit has been quite innovative with its products, and the KT7-RAID continues this tradition. Lets see how this baby shapes up under Linux."

Linux : Reviews : Instant messaging on GNU/Linux, part 1: AIM
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:37:17[PM] UTC )
This article series looks at some of the IM clients available for GNU/Linux and also rates them. In Part 1 of this series, the AOL IM service and the Linux clients available are reviewed.

Linux : Reviews : Changing lightbulbs the Whistler, Win98 and Linux way
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:35:58[PM] UTC )
"Red Hat 7.0 seemed the logical Linux choice because of availability and USB and 810E support, but I ran into a number of issues that made it look like it was more trouble than it was worth."

Linux : Reviews : Best Linux 2000 R3
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 12:09:46[AM] UTC )
"Best Linux has moved to international circles by providing a distribution that supports several languages. While the addition of these languages to Linux is important, one must ask, what else has Best Linux done to differentiate itself from other distributions, specifically Red Hat?"

Linux : Reviews : Giving voice to Linux with ViaVoice
Posted: ( Tue 26th Dec 2000 06:44:10[PM] UTC )
"I find ViaVoice for Linux to be useful. A substantial portion of this aricle was dictated into ViaVoice, and for the most part only minor corrections were needed. There are still problems and bugs, and speech recognition in general is still a developing science."

Linux : Reviews : Empeg car MP3 player and software
Posted: ( Tue 26th Dec 2000 06:39:46[PM] UTC )
"The reason I'm mentioning this piece of hardware here on Linux.com is simply because the player itself runs on Linux. Is this player for you? Do you have tons of money to waste? Seriously, I have doubts that I made the right choice."

Linux : Reviews : InstallShield: A work in progress
Posted: ( Mon 25th Dec 2000 05:25:52[PM] UTC )
InstallShield is the application of choice for most Windows software vendors to create the "setup.exe" program, which in turn is used to install other applications. Thanks to the wizardry of Java, InstallShield is now available for some Linux and Unix platforms, as well as for its origin, Windows.

Linux : Reviews : Red Hat Linux 7.0
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 07:10:01[PM] UTC )
"Red Hat 7.0 is more polished overall than 6.2 and is very competent on the surface. The GCC issue, however, is serious enough for me to question whether the distribution could be deployed in a live environment. On the whole, this is a shame as it's a nice package. If anything, it's better suited to the desktop than the server."

FreeOS : Reviews : XFree86 4.0.2
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 07:02:19[PM] UTC )
New in this release is Radeon support, a fix for DGA Mouse 2.0 support (to provide much more realistic movement on your favorite games amongst other things), native Darwin support, the Render X Protocol (for anti-aliased text), and much more.

Linux : Reviews : BestLinux 2000 R3
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 06:57:18[PM] UTC )
"Does BestLinux live up to its name? I personally don’t think so. I think it misses that mark by a fair margin. Its lack of hardware/software configuration tools, originality, and general configuration mishaps are seriously holding it back. This may change in the next version, and I really hope it does."

Linux : Reviews : Mandrake Linux 7.2
Posted: ( Sun 24th Dec 2000 06:54:43[PM] UTC )
"If you want a desktop linux, this is it. This is by far the easiest to use operating system I've seen in a long while. That includes MacOS and Windows. It's unfortunate that it will take a few days of configuring to be as fast and as convenient as my previous install."

Linux : Reviews : Helix GNOME
Posted: ( Thu 21st Dec 2000 10:36:27[PM] UTC )
"I really like the amount of polish that has gone into Helix GNOME. While it has a few stability and usability issues, this preview release doesn't have anything major enough to keep someone from using it as their main desktop now. And the eye candy is great."

FreeBSD : Reviews : Is FreeBSD a superior server platform?
Posted: ( Thu 21st Dec 2000 01:11:40[AM] UTC )
"For speed and security, FreeBSD is the way to go. In no way am I trying to say that Red Hat, or Linux, is inferior. Linux has very good desktop uses, and works well in some server situations. But, the FreeBSD 4.x tree is by far the fastest OS running on Intel hardware that I've ever seen."

Linux : Reviews : 3Com Office Connect Internet Server
Posted: ( Tue 19th Dec 2000 11:47:15[PM] UTC )
3Com's Internet Server integrates a firewall, email, a web server, file and print sharing, and naming services in one device. Inside the box sits an Intel processor running Linux. Storage for the device is provided by a 10Gb hard disk, making it big enough for most email web server needs.

Linux : Reviews : A sneak preview of Emacs 21.0
Posted: ( Mon 18th Dec 2000 09:41:46[PM] UTC )
Emacs has moved from a program that integrated into X only uneasily into one that provides some added functionality and features to make it a more comfortable fit. It's clear that even with the small survey offered here, Emacs has evolved dramatically this time around.
