Linux : Opinions : 10 Things a new Linux user needs to unlearn
Posted: ( Sat 21st Oct 2006 05:21:41[PM] UTC )
OK, you have Linux on your computer. Maybe you had some trouble getting it installed and everything working (probably wifi if I had to guess, or a winmodem), but you are past all that, everything is working, and you are ready to start using the computer. Old habits die hard, so hopefully this list helps you get over them.

Linux : Opinions : Using open source to make money on generic PCs
Posted: ( Sat 1st Jul 2006 05:49:11[PM] UTC )
Say you're in the business of making PCs. And, you want to make money at this business.

Linux : Opinions : Linux and NTFS: peace at last?
Posted: ( Tue 13th Sep 2005 04:52:59[PM] UTC )
Reading from NTFS file systems wasn't too much trouble. Writing to a file or creating a new file, though, was something else again. And, trying to adjust the size of an NTFS partition or recover a dead file was, while not impossible, hard enough that few people wanted to try it. Now, however, Paragon Software Group has created its own NTFS driver: NTFS for Linux. And, from what my friends over at PC Magazine Labs can tell, it works pretty darn well.

Linux : Opinions : Why MS Office for Linux is a win-win
Posted: ( Fri 19th Aug 2005 04:37:08[PM] UTC )
Dana Blankenhorn asks an important question which Microsoft ought to be asking itself: Would you buy MS Office for Linux? Let's go back a few years, to the antitrust suit brought about by the DoJ under the Clinton administration…

Linux : Opinions : Mcrosoft to buy Red Hat? Say it ain’'t so
Posted: ( Wed 25th May 2005 03:27:05[PM] UTC )
As David Berlind recently pointed out in his piece Is Microsoft considering acquisition of Red Hat? Microsoft could see Red Hat’s acquisition as a nice way to undermine IBM, but might not consider that a sufficient reason to do it. That, of course, is Microsoft’s perspective, but what about Red Hat’s? This is a company, remember, that wants to be Microsoft and, like Microsoft, makes its living packaging and selling other people’s ideas.

Linux : Opinions : New Linuxes, Old Problems
Posted: ( Sat 18th Dec 2004 05:51:32[PM] UTC )
Several new distributions make communicating with a Windows network more difficult than it should be.

Linux : Opinions : Linux vs. Apple: An Uncomfortable Battle
Posted: ( Thu 17th Jun 2004 04:15:56[PM] UTC )
Linux represents a threat and an opportunity for every software and hardware company. Apple is once again at the crossroads. While it will take a couple of years before we know whether the company will make the right choice, one thing is clear: Apple's path is about to become vastly more interesting.

Linux : Opinions : Red Hat: Open source GFS
Posted: ( Fri 30th Apr 2004 07:17:58[AM] UTC )
Global File System (GFS) is a cluster file-system for operating system distributions based on the Linux kernel. It is used as a shared file-system commonly on share-accessible block storage such as fibre-channel, shared SCSI, iSCSI and FireWire (IEEE 1394) devices. Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is a Linux kernel component and a set of user-land utilities which allow a system-administrator to group physical block storage devices into logical storage pools and create logical block-storage volumes out of them which are more wieldable and manageable and provide some useful features over the partition approach.

Linux : Opinions : What did SCO buy--Unix or the Brooklyn Bridge?
Posted: ( Thu 26th Feb 2004 05:46:21[PM] UTC )
To the outsider, and even to me for some time, the various lawsuits involving the SCO Group follow a relatively simple story line. I'm not a lawyer, but after many interviews with the involved parties and lawyers, the case boils down to divergent interpretations of the subject matter.

Linux : Opinions : Editorial on IBM Linux
Posted: ( Sun 8th Feb 2004 01:07:02[PM] UTC )
In a recent article over at PCMag.com John Dvorak said: "Although nobody has been able to smuggle out a single screenshot of the top-secret IBM Linux desktop OS often referred to as Blue Linux I have friends who have seen it. I am assured that it not only exists, but is being used by large numbers of IBMers. 'They are going through a process of eating their own dog food right now,' I was told."

Linux : Opinions : Why Run Free Software on a PDA?
Posted: ( Sun 8th Feb 2004 01:07:01[PM] UTC )
The Zaurus is the most popular and the most impressive Linux PDA. It sells for less than Palms, and a lot of people are watching it because of its potential, which we will try to present here.

Linux : Opinions : MyDoom, Windows and Linux
Posted: ( Sun 8th Feb 2004 01:07:01[PM] UTC )
Is Linux vulnerable to attacks? You betcha it is. But it is not now, nor will it ever be, as vulnerable to attacks as Windows, no matter how popular it gets.

Linux : Opinions : IBM's Blue Linux on the Desktop
Posted: ( Fri 30th Jan 2004 03:32:48[PM] UTC )
Although nobody has been able to smuggle out a single screenshot of the top-secret IBM Linux desktop OS often referred to as Blue Linux I have friends who have seen it. I am assured that it not only exists, but is being used by large numbers of IBMers. "They are going through a process of eating their own dog food right now," I was told.

Linux : Opinions : Is Novell Committed to Open Source?
Posted: ( Fri 9th Jan 2004 06:53:22[AM] UTC )
With the acquisition of SuSE and Ximian, Novell has made a serious investment in the idea that a software company can make money without exclusively owning the code it sells. Novell now leads a number of important open-source projects, but its approach to licensing the proprietary software it controls will be the true test of the company's commitment to its new path.

Linux : Opinions : Why Linux Is Wealthier Than Microsoft
Posted: ( Sun 7th Dec 2003 03:45:17[AM] UTC )
Linus Torvalds can muster more creativity from his far-flung rank and file than Bill Gates can from his corporate monolith.
