Linux : Opinions : Mcrosoft to buy Red Hat? Say it ain’'t so
Posted: ( Wed 25th May 2005 03:27:05[PM] UTC )
As David Berlind recently pointed out in his piece Is Microsoft considering acquisition of Red Hat? Microsoft could see Red Hat’s acquisition as a nice way to undermine IBM, but might not consider that a sufficient reason to do it. That, of course, is Microsoft’s perspective, but what about Red Hat’s? This is a company, remember, that wants to be Microsoft and, like Microsoft, makes its living packaging and selling other people’s ideas.

Linux : Howtos : How to block Gnutella with a Linux/Iptables firewall
Posted: ( Wed 25th May 2005 03:18:59[PM] UTC )
Many P2P (peer to peer) protocols are rather complex to control using packet filtering firewalls such as Linux's IpTables. This is because they often dont use fixed port numbers, sometimes use multiple connection protocols or even encryption.

The P2PWall project is developing software add-ins for Iptables to overcome these issues. The "Rope" module from the P2PWall project provides a scriptable kernel module for packet identification.

This article describes how to use Linux, Iptables and ROPE to identify (and block) the Gnutella protocol.

Linux : Articles : Running Windows viruses with Wine
Posted: ( Sun 20th Feb 2005 06:05:36[AM] UTC )
It just isn't fair that Windows users get all the viruses. I mean really, shouldn't Linux users be in on the fun as well? Well... thanks to the folks running the Wine project, Linux users can "catch the virus bug" too -- sort of.

Linux : Articles : Linux on the desktop
Posted: ( Sun 20th Feb 2005 06:05:36[AM] UTC )
What are we to make of IBM's silence about its desktop Linux policy? A while back, chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano challenged the company to move its desktops to Linux by the end of 2005. What's clear is that this hasn't happened and doesn't look like happening. And there's probably a good reason.

Linux : Articles : An introduction to Linux sound systems and APIs
Posted: ( Sun 12th Sep 2004 04:28:31[AM] UTC )
When coding a program, one of the best ways to show users that an event has happened is to produce sounds. That's why sound is now present in almost every program. Every operating system has different sound systems and APIs to access the sound card, so that no low-level coding is required to use the sound device. Programmers have many different choices concerning which system to use, especially under Linux -- and maybe that's the problem. This article will illustrate free sound architectures under Linux, as well as the different interfaces a programmer can use.

Linux : Articles : 'Independent' report used MS-sourced data to trash OSS
Posted: ( Sun 12th Sep 2004 04:28:31[AM] UTC )
When Microsoft announced victory in its battle with open source for the hearts, minds and wallets of Newham council last month, the press naturally asked to see the report Newham's decision was allegedly based on. Er, yes, the report would be forthcoming, we were told. So we gave it a few days, and asked again. And again. And again. But mysteriously, although Microsoft executives are prepared to shout from the rafters about what's in the report, the report itself never seems to arrive.

In this article I'm going to look at a particular sort of setup of a Linux home theatre PC ? one where the primary consideration is space. Suppose you have a small studio apartment, or a bedroom or study where you want to work on your computer, watch movies and TV, and play music and maybe games as well.
