Linux : Articles : VMWare Workstation 4.0 Review

If you have a mixed network like I do sometimes you have to compromise. At my job we run Windows, Linux and a sole Mac (Graphics dept.) and lets face it, when you do consulting work and if you design and develop custom applications you have to be able to develop for your clients platform and as much as I hate it, it's a Windows world. Before I used to have 2 workstations, one Windows and one Linux, or I had to dual boot. In the past, virtual machines have been lacking. Either they were too slow or lacking a certain pizazz to get the job done. Enter VMWare Workstation 4.

Linux : Opinions : Killing Linux
Posted: ( Thu 5th Jun 2003 05:40:38[AM] UTC )
The Linux community seems to be taking very lightly the recent events surrounding the SCO-versus-IBM lawsuit and SCO's claim that Linux relies on Unix in unfair ways. One writer calls the situation a farce, while another thinks it's laughable and stupid. Linus Torvalds has reportedly said it is not much different than a Jerry Springer Show—mere entertainment. The Linux community seems to have put its collective head in the sand. Nobody seems to realize that Linux and the entire open-source movement are at grave risk. Apparently the open-source idealists don't understand the quirks of the legal system.

Free software support is usually an e-mail or a mailing list away for the open-source community. Linux users don\'t need to play phone tag with help desks, just tap into the bevy of resources available online. Usually, users said, an answer is no more than a day away.

The 'meta-distro' Gentoo makes it possible to compile and configure everything on your system exac tly the way you like, providing you with more structure and tools to ease the process and automate updates. Do I still like Debian? I absolutely love it. But until further notice, Gentoo is now my f lavor of Linux.

Linux : Articles : Microsoft's double standard on third-world piracy
Posted: ( Fri 16th May 2003 05:08:43[AM] UTC )
outhEast Asia - I would like to talk about Microsoft's double standard regarding software piracy. I work for a software development company. We are currently working on different projects for a big telecommunications company under Microsoft's Consulting Services division. But let me tell you... at this very moment, if the BSA comes crashing into our development location, all our equipment will be confiscated, and we will be fined for our use of pirated Microsoft products (Windows 2000 AS, Visual Studio 6.0, Visual Studio .NET, SQL Server 2000, BizTalk 2000, etc.).
