SuSE Linux firewall on CD
"Instead of being installed on the hard disk, SuSE Linux Firewall is so-called a live system that enables the operating system to be booted directly from a read-only CD-ROM. Since it is impossible to manipulate the firewall software on CD-ROM, the live system constitutes a security gain."

How to roll your own Linux
Time was when after writing their own device driver program, boys fancied they
had grown up into men. Till Linus Torvalds came along and made them feel rather
puny. Torvalds set out to write an entire kernel and the results, if one were
to go by the cult following Linux still commands, were quite spectacular!
So what's a kernel? Here's how the Linux Kernel How-To describes it:
GnomeMeeting 0.9 released

Linux-based 'Simputer' brings low-cost tech to India
Running on three AAA batteries and an Intel chip, the Simputer will boast a free Linux operating system, 32MB of RAM and 16MB of Flash memory. At a cost of only $200, this simple device (which resembles a hefty Palm) may well bring the e-revolution to India where a scant 2 million PC's are currently distributed between a poverty stricken populace of nearly 1 billion.
Linux backers' common specification faces challenge
At least one leading Linux distribution - Red Hat - does not conform to LSB 1.0. Furthermore, it is unclear whether Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Red Hat Inc will - or should - conform to LSB as its Linux distribution effectively becomes a de-facto standard through its growing customer base.
Slackware 8.0 released!
This is a major upgrade, affecting almost all the packages in the distribution. Updates include XFree86 4.1.0, Linux kernels 2.2.19 and 2.4.5, KDE 2.1.2, GNOME 1.4, glibc 2.2.3, and all the usual utilities. Additions include ProFTPD, OpenSSH and OpenSSL, mod_ssl and mod_php, full support for the 2.4 kernel series, and many more.
Linux Standard Base specification 1.0.0 out
The final 1 point oh release of the LSB is here. The Linux Standard Base (LSB) defines a system interface for compiled applications and a minimal environment for support of installation scripts. Its purpose is to enable a uniform industry standard environment for high-volume applications conforming to the LSB.
Making an X Terminal from a PC
"An X terminal is a great way to expand the computing presence in a home or office. (We're talking about a PC that functions as an X terminal, not NEC's dedicated X-Terminal device.) They're fast, cool, a great demonstration of a Unix system's power, and, most importantly, dirt cheap."
