The windows are open and the light keeps shining in
Graeme Philipson points to an Australian survey by the market-research firm Strategic Research and
concludes that it's just a matter of time before Windows is truly everywhere -- with Linux not making a dent in the enterprise. He says, "You would think it was the Next Big Thing, and indeed it is attracting some support for marginal applications. But fewer than 1 percent of data centres intend to use it for serious applications."
Free Software's Stallman strikes back at Microsoft
In a speech at New York University's Stern School of Business, Richard Stallman defended the GPL against attacks from Microsoft minions. He took a few shots at Caldera, calling it "parasite" on the free-software movement. Stallman addressed everything from the distinctions between open source and GNU/Linux to his take on how Microsoft might be best broken up by the government, in the aftermath of the Department of Justice antitrust trial.

SuSE: Two faults detected in the man package
Two vulnerabilities have been found in the man package that is installed by default in all SuSE Linux distributions. The first error is a format string bug in the error handling routine of the man command that can allow a local attacker to gain the privileges of the user "man" on SuSE Linux systems. The second is a segmentation fault that can be caused by the options "-S ::: foo" to the man command. On SuSE and Debian systems, the code responsible for the bug is different from the one found in other distributions and is not exploitable.

It is designed for developing and porting applications that require superior performance on high-end servers and workstations and is equally suited to porting 32-bit applications or RISC applications to Itanium-based systems. New configuration tools and security enhancements are also available.

Open Source-onomics: Examining some pseudo-economic arguments about Open Source
The following are some of the false statements put forth and my arguments refuting them.
"The poor performance of Linux stocks proves that Linux is a failure"
MS-built UK 'Government Gateway' locks out non-MS browsers
Predictably, Microsoft's 'help' in turning "Britain's e-government vision into a reality" has mysteriously turned into a lockout for users of anything other than IE on Windows. Linux, Netscape and Mac can look but not touch, because the digital certificate system selected by the developers mysteriously always seems to lead to IE 5.01 or above on Windows. A detailed investigation carried out by UK magazine Linuxuser notes that in some cases non-Microsoft browsers are simply refused entry.
HP exec: Linux will be desktop champ
Dell Computer and other industry giants may be pessimistic about Linux's chances on the desktop, but HP executive and Linux veteran Bruce Perens believes the open source OS will still triumph in the end.
