Is Linux the right choice for SMEs?Is Linux the right choice for SMEs?

Cheap software is a top priority for SMEs so software which is effectively free, like open source, would seem an obvious choice. But just how easy is it for a small firm to swap Windows for Linux?

Interview: Interview with Ted Ts\'o

Ted discusses his work on the Linux kernel, Linux International, Linux Standard Base and other areas of the Open Source community.

Open source subject to fiery debate

Is there room in the industry for both open source software, which lets users view and tinker with a program\'s source code, as well as proprietary software that does not?

Apache 2.0 Beats IIS at Its Own Game

After three years of development, Apache 2.0 (or, more accurately, Version 2.035) has finally been released. Unix users will find plenty to like in Version 2.0, but the biggest impact will be on Windows servers, where Apache can now perform as a production-level Web server.

Why Linux Made Inroads At Financial Institutions

When the loss of about 1,000 computer servers in the World Trade Center attacks put Lehman Brothers in the market to buy millions of dollars of systems, it looked at a slightly unorthodox option: Linux, an operating system that is as noteworthy for its speed as for the fact that its source code is free.

FSF asks Lindows, \"Where\'s the source?\"

Bradley Kuhn, vice president of the Free Software Foundation, says the organization is contacting LindowsOS representatives because the company has not included source code with its \"sneak preview\" releases. Lindows CEO Michael Robertson says his company will comply with the GPL when the product is released to the public.

LindowsOS Available for Download

Lindows.com, Inc. announced a significant milestone, the release of Sneak Preview 2. Lindows.com, Inc. is offering a further glimpse of the company\'s progress to Insiders, a highly interested group of LindowsOS supporters prior to launching their first official release, LindowsOS Version1, later this year.

Linus without Linux

Even people remote from the computer industry have heard about Linux, a free operating system that has become widespread and, some people expect, may someday replace Microsoft Windows. Its creator Linus Torvalds, the world leader of the popular open source movement in the IT industry, told his story (in collaboration with David Diamond) in the book Just for Fun, published by HarperCollins in May 2001. The book was translated into Russian by EnRus and published by EKSMO.
