A world without Microsoft
The community that has developed has had a substantial impact on the industry, and has also created a ground-breaking alternative professional environment where the work itself is more important than profits or pay cheques. Developers face a stark choice between the fat salaries major companies offer and working for little but their ideals, yet many still opt for the latter.
Little-iron chef
According to Dennis Powell, sometimes yesterday's software is best for yesterday's hardware. Here he explains why he is of the opinion that Linux distributions can no longer claim to run on minimal hardware.
Survey results from SuSE: Users believe Linux is more stable, 23% will consider switch
The results indicate that stability is a primary motivator among existing Linux users, with 46% citing stability of Linux as an "outstanding asset," as compared to 13% of Microsoft Windows users claiming the same about their OS of choice. Also on the whole, surveyed Windows users associated "stability" more often with Linux than they did Windows.
First virus to infect both Windows, Linux emerges
The virus, dubbed ``W32.Winux'' by the company that first reported it, anti-virus firm Central Command, is not destructive and does not appear to have infected any computers yet. Still, the virus sets a disturbing precedent.
Virtual File System - Part 2
The Inode
An inode contains the management information for a particular file. The information contained includes owner id, size of file, access time, access rights, and the allocation of data to blocks on the physical media. The inode already contains a few block numbers to ensure efficient access to small files. Access to larger files is provided via indirect blocks that contain block numbers. The indirect blocks come in three flavors:
*Indirect reference
*Double indirect reference
*Triple indirect reference
The definition of the inode structure is as follows:
Understanding and working with network services

Open-source credo moves to chip design
Engineers around the world, connected via the Internet, are seeking to develop a vast library of freely available hardware designs, similar to how Linux developers and other open-source programmers share intellectual property. This library--consisting of design elements for processors, memory controllers, peripherals, motherboards, etc--would aide semiconductor start-ups and device manufacturers alike.
Midgard 1.4.1 "Bifrost" released
Midgard 1.4.1 is the first release of Midgard to support the PHP4 scripting language as a loadable module. No patching of the scripting engine is required. Many bugs in core Midgard utilities like the Repligard replication system have also been fixed, providing a stable content management system for highly available environments.
SuSE 7.1 Professional still in minor leagues
The tools and documentation for serious server work are missing. In six manuals and nearly 1,000 pages of documentation, there is virtually no information on Apache, Sendmail and Samba. As a desktop operating system, this product would be a good fit only for Microsoft haters and cash-strapped companies installing systems for the first time.
